1I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

2For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

3Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

4Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

5If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

6Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

7If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

8Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

9If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;

10Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

11For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

12For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

13If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

14What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

15Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

16If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

17Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

18(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)

19If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

20If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

22Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

23For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

24If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

25If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

26If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

27And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

28This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

29If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

30Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

31If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

32The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

33If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

34Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

35Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

36Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

37I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

38If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

39If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

40Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

1Tôi đã có lập ước với mắt tôi; Vậy, làm sao tôi còn dám nhìn người nữ đồng trinh?

2Vì phần do Đức Chúa Trời ở trên trời, Và cơ nghiệp do Đấng Toàn năng ở nơi cao, là gì?

3Há chẳng phải sự tai họa cho kẻ gian ác, Và sự hư hại cho kẻ làm dữ sao?

4Chớ thì Đức Chúa Trời chẳng thấy đường lối tôi, Và đếm các bước tôi sao?

5Nếu tôi có ăn ở cách dối trá, Và chân tôi vội vàng theo chước gian giảo,

6Nguyện Đức Chúa Trời cân tôi trên cân thăng bằng, Thì Ngài sẽ nhìn biết sự thanh liêm của tôi.

7Nếu chân tôi trở bước bỏ đường chánh đáng, Và lòng tôi đi theo con mắt tôi, Nếu có sự ô uế chi dính vào tay tôi,

8Nguyện tôi gieo, và có kẻ khác gặt hái, Nguyện thổ sản tôi bị nhổ đi!

9Nếu lòng tôi bị người nữ quyến dụ, Nếu tôi rình rập ở nơi cửa của lân cận tôi,

10Nguyện vợ tôi xây cối cho người khác, Và có kẻ khác nằm cùng nàng.

11Vì điều ấy vốn tội trọng gớm ghê, Một tội ác đáng bị quan xét đoán phạt:

12Tội ấy là một ngọn lửa thiêu hóa cho đến chốn trầm luân, Tàn hại các của cải tôi đến tận cùng.

13Nếu tôi có khinh duyên cớ của tôi trai tớ gái tôi, Lúc chúng nó tranh luận với tôi,

14Thì tôi sẽ làm sao khi Đức Chúa Trời chổi dậy? Khi Ngài đến thẩm sát tôi, tôi sẽ đáp sao?

15Đấng đã tạo thành tôi trong lòng mẹ tôi, Há chẳng có dựng nên chúng nó sao? Há chẳng phải cũng một Đức Chúa Trời dựng nên chúng ta trong lòng mẹ sao?

16Nếu tôi từ chối điều kẻ nghèo khổ ước ao, Gây cho mắt người góa bụa bị hao mòn,

17Nếu tôi có ăn bánh tôi một mình, Và kẻ mồ côi chẳng có được ăn với;

18Thật từ lúc tôi còn trẻ, nó cùng lớn lên với tôi như con với cha; Còn người góa bụa, tôi đã nâng đỡ từ khi tôi lọt lòng mẹ tôi;

19Nếu tôi có thấy người nào thác vì không quần áo, Và kẻ nghèo thiếu chẳng có mềm;

20Nếu lòng người không chúc phước cho tôi, Và người không nhờ lông chiên tôi mà được ấm áp;

21Nếu tôi có giơ tay hiếp kẻ mồ côi, Bởi vì tôi thấy có kẻ phù trợ tôi trong cửa thành;

22Nguyện cho vai tôi rớt ra khỏi nơi khác, Và cánh tay tôi bị gẫy rứt ra đi!

23Vì sự tai họa từ Đức Chúa Trời giáng xuống làm tôi kinh khiếp, Và trước mặt sự oai nghiêm Ngài, Tôi nào làm chi được.

24Nếu tôi có để lòng tin cậy nơi vàng, Và nói với vàng ròng rằng: Ngươi là sự nương nhờ của ta;

25Nếu tôi vui mừng về tài vật tôi nhiều, Và vì tay tôi đã được lắm của;

26Nếu tôi có thấy mặt trời chiếu sáng, Và mặt trăng mọc lên soi tỏ,

27Nếu lòng tôi có thầm mê hoặc, Và miệng tôi hôn gởi tay tôi;

28Điều đó cũng là một tội ác đáng bị quan xét phạt; Vì nếu làm vậy, tôi đã từ chối Đức Chúa Trời trên cao kia.

29Nếu tôi có vui mừng vì cớ tàn hại kẻ ghét tôi, Và hứng lòng khi tai vạ giáng cho nó;

30Trái lại tôi không cho phép miệng tôi phạm tội, Mà lấy sự rủa sả trù ẻo, nguyện hại mạng sống nó;

31Nếu các người nhà tôi chẳng có nói: “Ai sẽ tìm được người nào không được ăn no nê thịt súc vật người?”

32Người lạ không có ngủ đêm ở ngoài đường; Tôi mở cửa cho kẻ hành khách;

33Nếu tôi có che tội mình như A-đam, Mà giấu sự gian ác mình ở trong lòng,

34Tại vì tôi kinh hãi chúng đông, Và e sợ bị họ hàng khinh bỉ, Đến đổi ở yên lặng, chẳng dám bước ra khỏi cửa.

35Oâi! Chớ chi có một người nghe tôi! Nầy là dấu hiệu tôi ký, Nguyện Đấng Toàn năng đáp lời tôi; Nguyện kẻ cừu nghịch tôi làm một trạng từ!

36Tôi quả hẳn sẽ mang trạng từ ấy trên vai mình, Đội nó trên đầu tôi như một mão triều thiên.

37Aét tôi sẽ thuật cho cừu địch biết số bước tôi, Đến trước mặt nó như một vua chúa.

38Nếu đất tôi kêu cáo tôi, Các giòng cày nó khóc với nhau;

39Nếu tôi ăn sản vật nó mà không trả giá bạc, Làm khuấy khuất nguyên chủ nó cho đến phải chết mất;

40Nguyện gai góc mọc thay lúa miến, Và cỏ lùng thế cho lúa mạch! Đến đây hết lời của Gióp.
