1And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

2Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

3Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

4But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

5¶ And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

6Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

7And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

8And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

9¶ Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

10And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

11Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.

12And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,

13And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

14For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

15And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

1Thời đó, khi số môn đệ thêm đông, thì các tín hữu Do-thái theo văn hoá Hy-lạp kêu trách những tín hữu Do-thái bản xứ, vì trong việc phân phát lương thực hằng ngày, các bà goá trong nhóm họ bị bỏ quên.

2Bởi thế, Nhóm Mười Hai triệu tập toàn thể các môn đệ và nói : “Chúng tôi mà bỏ việc rao giảng Lời Thiên Chúa để lo việc ăn uống, là điều không phải.

3Vậy, thưa anh em, anh em hãy tìm trong cộng đoàn bảy người được tiếng tốt, đầy Thần Khí và khôn ngoan, rồi chúng tôi sẽ cắt đặt họ làm công việc đó.

4Còn chúng tôi, chúng tôi sẽ chuyên lo cầu nguyện và phục vụ Lời Thiên Chúa.”

5Đề nghị trên được mọi người tán thành. Họ chọn ông Tê-pha-nô, một người đầy lòng tin và đầy Thánh Thần, cùng với các ông Phi-líp-phê, Pơ-rô-khô-rô, Ni-ca-no, Ti-môn, Pác-mê-na và ông Ni-cô-la, một người ngoại quê An-ti-ô-khi-a đã theo đạo Do-thái.

6Họ đưa các ông ra trước mặt các Tông Đồ. Sau khi cầu nguyện, các Tông Đồ đặt tay trên các ông.

7Lời Thiên Chúa vẫn lan tràn, và tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, số các môn đệ tăng thêm rất nhiều, lại cũng có một đám rất đông các tư tế đón nhận đức tin.

8Ông Tê-pha-nô được đầy ân sủng và quyền năng, đã làm những điềm thiêng dấu lạ lớn lao trong dân.

9Có những người thuộc hội đường gọi là hội đường của nhóm nô lệ được giải phóng, gốc Ky-rê-nê và A-lê-xan-ri-a, cùng với một số người gốc Ki-li-ki-a và A-xi-a, đứng lên tranh luận với ông Tê-pha-nô.

10Nhưng họ không địch nổi lời lẽ khôn ngoan mà Thần Khí đã ban cho ông.

11Bấy giờ, họ mới xui mấy người phao lên rằng : “Chúng tôi đã nghe hắn nói lộng ngôn xúc phạm đến ông Mô-sê và Thiên Chúa.”

12Họ sách động dân và các kỳ mục cùng kinh sư, rồi ập đến bắt ông và điệu đến Thượng Hội Đồng.

13Họ đưa mấy người chứng gian ra khai rằng : “Tên này không ngừng nói những lời phạm đến Nơi Thánh và Lề Luật.

14Vì chúng tôi đã nghe hắn nói rằng Giê-su người Na-da-rét sẽ phá huỷ nơi này và thay đổi những tục lệ mà ông Mô-sê đã truyền lại cho chúng ta.”

15Toàn thể cử toạ trong Thượng Hội Đồng đều nhìn thẳng vào ông Tê-pha-nô, và họ thấy mặt ông giống như mặt thiên sứ.
