1And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

2And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.

3And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?

4Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

5¶ And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

6But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.

7And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.

8And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

9¶ And the LORD spake unto Gad, David’s seer, saying,

10Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

11So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee

12Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

13And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

14¶ So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.

15And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

16And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

17And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.

18¶ Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

19And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.

20And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

21And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

22Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.

23And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.

24And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

25So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.

26And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.

27And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.

28¶ At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.

29For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.

30But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.

1Xa-tan đứng lên chống Ít-ra-en và xúi giục vua Đa-vít thống kê dân số Ít-ra-en.

2Vua Đa-vít nói với ông Giô-áp và các tướng lãnh quân đội : “Hãy đi đếm dân Ít-ra-en, từ Bơ-e Se-va tới Đan và về trình cho ta biết con số là bao nhiêu.”

3Ông Giô-áp thưa : “Xin ĐỨC CHÚA tăng dân Người lên gấp trăm ! Thưa đức vua chúa thượng tôi, tất cả những người đó lại không phải là bề tôi của chúa thượng tôi sao ? Vậy tại sao chúa thượng tôi lại muốn điều tra như thế ? Tại sao bắt Ít-ra-en phải mang tội ?”

4Tuy nhiên, vì tuân lệnh vua, ông Giô-áp ra đi, rảo khắp Ít-ra-en, rồi trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem.

5Ông Giô-áp nộp cho vua Đa-vít con số thống kê nhân khẩu : Ít-ra-en có tất cả một triệu một trăm ngàn người biết tuốt gươm và Giu-đa có bốn trăm bảy mươi ngàn người biết tuốt gươm.

6Nhưng chi tộc Lê-vi và Ben-gia-min, ông Giô-áp không tính vào số ấy, vì ông ghê tởm mệnh lệnh của vua.

7Việc này chướng mắt Thiên Chúa và Người đã đánh phạt Ít-ra-en.

8Vua Đa-vít thưa cùng Thiên Chúa : “Con đã phạm tội nặng khi làm việc này. Giờ đây, xin bỏ qua lỗi lầm của tôi tớ Ngài, vì con đã hành động rất ngu xuẩn.”

9Bấy giờ ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Gát, thầy chiêm của vua Đa-vít, rằng :

10“Hãy đi nói với Đa-vít : ĐỨC CHÚA phán thế này : Ta đưa ra cho ngươi ba điều. Ngươi hãy chọn lấy một trong ba, và Ta sẽ thực hiện cho ngươi.”

11Vậy ông Gát đến gặp vua Đa-vít và thưa : “ĐỨC CHÚA phán thế này : ngươi phải chịu nhận :

12hoặc là ba năm đói ; hoặc ba tháng phải chạy trốn để thoát kẻ thù, vì gươm của kẻ thù rượt đuổi ngươi ; hoặc ba ngày chịu gươm của ĐỨC CHÚA, tức là ôn dịch trong xứ, vì sứ giả của ĐỨC CHÚA tàn phá toàn cõi Ít-ra-en. Vậy bây giờ xin ngài xem tôi phải trả lời thế nào cho Đấng đã sai tôi.”

13Vua Đa-vít nói với ông Gát : “Tôi lâm vào cảnh rất ngặt nghèo ! Thà tôi sa vào tay ĐỨC CHÚA còn hơn, vì lòng thương của Người rất bao la ; nhưng ước chi tôi đừng sa vào tay người phàm !”

14ĐỨC CHÚA giáng ôn dịch xuống Ít-ra-en, và bảy mươi ngàn người trong Ít-ra-en đã gục ngã.

15Thiên sứ của ĐỨC CHÚA đang đứng gần sân lúa của ông Oóc-nan người Giơ-vút,

16Vua Đa-vít ngước mắt lên, thấy thiên sứ của ĐỨC CHÚA đứng giữa đất và trời, tay vung gươm trần hướng về Giê-ru-sa-lem. Bấy giờ vua Đa-vít cùng các kỳ mục, mình khoác bao bị, ngã sấp xuống đất.

17Vua Đa-vít thưa cùng Thiên Chúa : “Chẳng phải chính con đã ra lệnh kiểm kê dân số sao ? Con mới là kẻ đã phạm tội, đã làm điều dữ. Còn những người kia, họ chỉ là bầy chiên, họ đâu có làm gì nên tội ! Lạy ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của con, xin tay Ngài cứ đè nặng trên con và nhà cha con, nhưng xin đừng giáng hoạ xuống dân Ngài !”

18Bấy giờ thiên sứ của ĐỨC CHÚA nói với ông Gát : “Hãy bảo Đa-vít lên dựng một bàn thờ kính ĐỨC CHÚA tại sân lúa của Oóc-nan người Giơ-vút.”

19Vua Đa-vít đi lên theo lời ông Gát đã nói nhân danh ĐỨC CHÚA.

20Khi ông Oóc-nan trở lại và nhìn thấy thiên sứ, thì bốn người con đang ở bên ông liền đi tìm chỗ ẩn. Bấy giờ ông Oóc-nan đang đập lúa.

21Vua Đa-vít vào đến tận chỗ ông Oóc-nan : khi nhìn thấy vua, ông bỏ sân lúa đi ra và sấp mặt xuống đất lạy vua.

22Vua nói với ông : “Hãy nhượng sân lúa cho ta để ta lấy chỗ xây một bàn thờ kính ĐỨC CHÚA. Cứ nhượng cho ta, ta sẽ trả sòng phẳng. Có thế, tai hoạ mới ngưng, không còn giáng xuống trên dân nữa.”

23Ông Oóc-nan thưa với vua Đa-vít : “Xin đức vua, chúa thượng tôi, cứ lấy sân lúa, và điều gì ngài cho là tốt thì xin cứ làm. Ngài xem : đã có bò làm lễ toàn thiêu, có bàn đạp lúa làm củi và có lúa làm lễ phẩm. Tất cả những thứ này, tôi xin biếu hết.”

24Nhưng Vua Đa-vít trả lời : “Không ! Ta muốn mua của ngươi, giá cả sòng phẳng, chứ không muốn lấy của ngươi mà dâng lên ĐỨC CHÚA những lễ toàn thiêu không mất tiền mua.”

25Vậy vua Đa-vít đã trao cho ông Oóc-nan số vàng cân nặng sáu ký để mua nơi ấy.

26Vua Đa-vít xây một bàn thờ kính ĐỨC CHÚA ở đấy, rồi dâng của lễ toàn thiêu và kỳ an. Vua kêu cầu ĐỨC CHÚA và Người đã đáp lời, cho lửa từ trời xuống trên bàn thờ toàn thiêu.

27ĐỨC CHÚA đã ra lệnh cho thiên sứ tra gươm vào vỏ.

28Khi vua Đa-vít thấy ĐỨC CHÚA đã đáp lời tại sân lúa của ông Oóc-nan người Giơ-vút, thì vua đã sát tế tại đó,

29vì bấy giờ Nhà Tạm của ĐỨC CHÚA do ông Mô-sê làm trong sa mạc và bàn thờ toàn thiêu vẫn còn ở trên cao tại Ghíp-ôn.

30Vua Đa-vít không thể lên thỉnh cầu Thiên Chúa trên ấy, vì khiếp sợ lưỡi gươm của thiên sứ ĐỨC CHÚA.
