1Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down wounded in mount Gelboe.

2And the Philistines drew near pursuing after Saul, and his sons, and they killed Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchisua the sons of Saul.

3And the battle grew hard against Saul, and the archers reached him, and wounded him with arrows.

4And Saul said to his armourbearer: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest these uncircumcised come, and mock me. But his armourbearer would not, for he was struck with fear: so Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.

5And when his armourbearer saw it, to wit, that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died.

6So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house fell together.

7And when the men of Israel, that dwelt in the plains, saw this, they fled: and Saul and his sons being dead, they forsook their cities, and were scattered up and down: and the Philistines came, and dwelt in them.

8And the next day the Philistines taking away the spoils of them that were slain, found Saul and his sons lying on mount Gelboe.

9And when they had stripped him, and cut off his head, and taken away his armour, they sent it into their land, to be carried about, and shewn in the temples of the idols and to the people.

10And his armour they dedicated in the temple of their god, and his head they fastened up in the temple of Dagon.

11And when the men of Jabes Galaad had heard this, to wit, all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

12All the valiant men of them arose, and took the bodies of Saul and of his sons, and brought them to Jabes, and buried their bones under the oak that was in Jabes, and they fasted seven days.

13So Saul died for his iniquities, because he transgressed the commandment of the Lord, which he had commanded, and kept it not: and moreover consulted also a witch,

14And trusted not is the Lord: therefore he slew him, and transferred his kingdom to David the son of Isai.

1Người Phi-li-tinh giao chiến với Ít-ra-en. Người Ít-ra-en chạy trốn trước mặt người Phi-li-tinh và bị tử thương ngã gục trên núi Ghin-bô-a.

2Người Phi-li-tinh bám sát vua Sa-un và các con trai vua ; và chúng giết ông Giô-na-than, ông A-vi-na-đáp và ông Man-ki Su-a, các con vua Sa-un.

3Áp lực của mặt trận dồn về phía vua Sa-un. Lính bắn cung nhận ra vua. Vua rất run sợ khi thấy lính bắn cung.

4Vua Sa-un bảo người lính hầu : “Rút gươm ra và đâm ta đi, kẻo bọn không cắt bì ấy đến đâm ta và ngạo ta.” Nhưng người lính hầu không dám vì quá sợ. Vua Sa-un mới lấy gươm ra và lao mình vào mũi gươm.

5Người lính hầu thấy vua đã chết, cũng lao mình vào mũi gươm của anh ta và chết theo vua.

6Thế là vua Sa-un với ba con trai và mọi người của vua cùng chết một lúc.

7Người Ít-ra-en ở bên kia thung lũng thấy người Ít-ra-en chạy trốn, và vua Sa-un cùng các con của vua đã chết, thì bỏ các thành của họ và chạy trốn. Người Phi-li-tinh đến và lập cư ở đó.

8Ngày hôm sau người Phi-li-tinh đến lột các xác chết, thì tìm thấy vua Sa-un và các người con trai nằm trên núi Ghin-bô-a.

9Chúng chặt đầu vua và tước vũ khí của vua. Rồi chúng sai người rảo quanh khắp xứ Phi-li-tinh, để báo tin mừng cho các tượng thần của chúng và cho dân.

10Chúng đặt vũ khí của vua Sa-un trong đền các thần của chúng, còn sọ của vua thì chúng treo trong đền Đa-gôn.

11Khi dân thành Gia-vết miền Ga-la-át nghe biết cách người Phi-li-tinh đã đối xử với vua Sa-un,

12thì tất cả các dũng sĩ lên đường, lấy xác vua Sa-un và xác các con vua đưa về Gia-vết ; họ chôn hài cốt dưới cây tùng tại Gia-vết, rồi ăn chay bảy ngày.

13Vua Sa-un chết vì đã thất trung với ĐỨC CHÚA, chẳng tuân giữ lời ĐỨC CHÚA truyền, lại còn kiếm một mụ đồng bóng mà thỉnh vấn nữa.

14Ông đã không thỉnh vấn ĐỨC CHÚA nên Người đã khiến ông phải chết và đã chuyển trao vương quyền cho ông Đa-vít, con ông Gie-sê.
