The Words of Agur

1These are the words of Agur son of Jakeh—the burden that this man declared to Ithiel: “I am weary, O God,and worn out.

2Surely I am the most ignorant of men,and I lack the understanding of a man.

3I have not learned wisdom,and I have no knowledge of the Holy One.

4Who has ascended to heaven and come down?Who has gathered the wind in His hands?Who has bound up the waters in His cloak?Who has established all the ends of the earth?What is His name, and what is the name of His Son—surely you know!

5Every word of God is flawless;He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

6Do not add to His words,lest He rebuke you and prove you a liar.

7Two things I ask of You—do not refuse me before I die:

8Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me.Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread that is my portion.

9Otherwise, I may have too muchand deny You, saying, ‘Who is the LORD?’Or I may become poor and steal,profaning the name of my God.

10Do not slander a servant to his master,or he will curse you, and you will bear the guilt.

11There is a generation of those who curse their fathersand do not bless their mothers.

12There is a generation of those who are pure in their own eyesand yet unwashed of their filth.

13There is a generation—how haughty are their eyesand pretentious are their glances—

14there is a generation whose teeth are swordsand whose jaws are knives,devouring the oppressed from the earthand the needy from among men.

15The leech has two daughters:Give and Give. There are three things that are never satisfied, four that never say, ‘Enough!’:

16Sheol, the barren womb, land never satisfied with water, and fire that never says, ‘Enough!’

17As for the eye that mocks a fatherand scorns obedience to a mother,may the ravens of the valley pluck it outand young vultures devour it.

18There are three things too wonderful for me, four that I cannot understand:

19the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship at sea, and the way of a man with a maiden.

20This is the way of an adulteress:She eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’

21Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:

22a servant who becomes king, a fool who is filled with food,

23an unloved woman who marries, and a maidservant who supplants her mistress.

24Four things on earth are small, yet they are exceedingly wise:

25The ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer;

26the rock badgersare creatures of little power, yet they make their homes in the rocks;

27the locusts have no king, yet they all advance in formation;

28and the lizard can be caught in one’s hands, yet it is found in the palaces of kings.

29There are three things that are stately in their stride, and four that are impressive in their walk:

30a lion, mighty among beasts, refusing to retreat before anything;

31a strutting rooster; a he-goat; and a king with his army around him.

32If you have foolishly exalted yourselfor if you have plotted evil, put your hand over your mouth.

33For as the churning of milk yields butter,and the twisting of the nose draws blood, so the stirring of anger brings forth strife.”

5Các lời của Đức Chúa Trời đều đã thét luyện: Ngài là cái thuẫn đỡ cho người nương cậy nơi Ngài.

6Chớ thêm chi vào các lời Ngài. E Ngài quở trách ngươi, và ngươi bị cầm nói dối chăng.

7Tôi có cầu Chúa hai điều; Xin chớ từ chối trước khi tôi thác:

8Xin dan xa khỏi tôi sự lường gạt và lời dối trá; Chớ cho tôi nghèo khổ, hoặc sự giàu sang; Hãy nuôi tôi đủ vật thực cần dùng,

9E khi no đủ, tôi từ chối Chúa, Mà rằng: Đức Giê-hô-va là ai? Và lại kẻo e tôi bị nghèo khổ, ăn trộm cắp, Và làm ô danh của Đức Chúa Trời tôi chăng.

10Chớ phao vu kẻ tôi tớ cho chủ nó, E nó rủa sả ngươi, và ngươi mắc tội chăng.

11Có một dòng dõi rủa sả cha mình, Cũng không chúc phước cho mẹ mình.

12Có một dòng dõi tư tưởng mình thánh sạch, Song chưa được rửa sạch nhơ bẩn mình.

13Có một dòng dõi bộ mặt kiêu hãnh thay, Mí mắt giương cao dường nào!

14Có một dòng dõi nanh tợ gươm, Hàm răng như dao, Đặng cắn xé những người khó khăn khỏi đất, Và những kẻ nghèo khổ khỏi loài người.

15Con đỉa có hai con gái, nói rằng: Hãy cho! hãy cho! Có ba sự chẳng hề no đủ, Và bốn điều chẳng nói rằng: Thôi, đủ!

16Tức là âm phủ, người đàn bà son sẻ, Đất không no đủ nước, Và lửa mà chẳng hề nói: Đủ rồi!

17Con mắt nhạo báng cha mình, Khinh sự vâng lời đối với mẹ mình, Các con quạ của trũng sẽ móc mắt ấy, Và các chim ưng con sẽ ăn nó đi.

18Có ba việc lấy làm diệu kỳ cho ta, Và bốn điều mà ta chẳng biết được:

19Là đường chim ưng bay trên trời; Lối con rắn bò trên hòn đá; Lằn tàu chạy giữa biển, Và đường người nam giao hợp với người nữ.

20Tánh nết người kỵ nữ cũng vậy: Nàng ăn, rồi nàng lau miệng, Và nói rằng: Tôi có phạm tội ác đâu.

21Có ba vật làm cho trái đất rúng động, Và bốn điều, nó chẳng chịu nổi được:

22Là tôi tớ khi được tức vị vua; Kẻ ngu muội khi được no nê đồ ăn;

23Người đàn bà đáng ghét khi lấy chồng, Và con đòi khi kế nghiệp bà chủ mình.

24Có bốn vật nhỏ mọn trên trái đất, Song vốn rất khôn ngoan:

25Con kiến dầu là loại yếu hèn, Lo sắm sẵn vật thực mình trong mùa hạ;

26Con thỏ rừng dầu là loại không sức lực, Đóng cư sở mình trong hòn đá;

27Loài cào cào dầu không có vua chúa, Bay ra có từng đám;

28Con thằn lằn mà người ta lấy tay bắt được, Vẫn ở trong đền vua.

29Có ba vật điệu đi tốt đẹp, Và bốn vật nước bước xem sang trọng:

30Sư tử, mạnh hơn hết trong các loài vật, Chẳng lui lại trước mặt loài nào cả;

31Con ngựa hăng thắng tử tế, con dê đực, Và vua không ai đối địch được.

32Nếu ngươi có làm ngu dại mà tự cao kiêu ngạo, Và nếu ngươi có ác tưởng, hãy đặt tay che miệng mình.

33Vì ép sữa làm ra mỡ sữa, Và đánh đập lỗ mũi bèn làm cho phun máu; Cũng vậy trêu chọn giận sanh ra điều tranh cạnh.
