The Plot to Kill Jesus

1When Jesus had finished saying all these things, He told His disciples,

2“You know that the Passover is two days away, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”

3At that time the chief priests and elders of the people assembled in the courtyard of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,

4and they conspired to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him.

5“But not during the feast,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

6While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper,

7a woman came to Him with an alabaster jar of expensive perfume, which she poured on His head as He reclined at the table.

8When the disciples saw this, they were indignant and asked, “Why this waste?

9This perfume could have been sold at a high price, and the money given to the poor.”

10Aware of this, Jesus asked, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful deed to Me.

11The poor you will always have with you,but you will not always have Me.

12By pouring this perfume on Me, she has prepared My body for burial.

13Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached in all the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

14Then one of the Twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests

15and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I hand Him over to you?” And they set out for him thirty pieces of silver.

16So from then on Judas looked for an opportunity to betray Jesus.

Preparing the Passover

17On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”

18He answered, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him that the Teacher says, ‘My time is near. I will keep the Passover with My disciples at your house.’”

19So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

The Last Supper

20When evening came, Jesus was reclining with the twelve disciples.

21And while they were eating, He said to them, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray Me.”

22They were deeply grieved and began to ask Him one after another, “Surely not I, Lord?”

23Jesus answered, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with Me will betray Me.

24The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed. It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

25Then Judas, who would betray Him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “You have said it yourself.”

26While they were eating, Jesus took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is My body.”

27Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.

28This is My blood of the covenant,which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

29I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

30And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31Then Jesus said to them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of Me. For it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd,and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

32But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”

33Peter said to Him, “Even if all fall away on account of You, I never will.”

34“Truly I tell you,” Jesus declared, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”

35Peter replied, “Even if I have to die with You, I will never deny You.” And all the other disciples said the same thing.

Jesus Prays at Gethsemane

36Then Jesus went with His disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and He told them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

37He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.

38Then He said to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me.”

39Going a little farther, He fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.”

40Then Jesus returned to the disciples and found them sleeping. “Were you not able to keep watch with Me for one hour?” He asked Peter.

41“Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

42A second time He went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup cannot pass unless I drink it, may Your will be done.”

43And again Jesus returned and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

44So He left them and went away once more and prayed a third time, saying the same thing.

45Then He returned to the disciples and said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

46Rise, let us go! See, My betrayer is approaching!”

The Betrayal of Jesus

47While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and elders of the people.

48Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The One I kiss is the man; arrest Him.”

49Going directly to Jesus, he said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.

50“Friend,” Jesus replied, “do what you came for.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus, and arrested Him.

51At this, one of Jesus’ companions drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

52“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him. “For all who draw the sword will die by the sword.

53Are you not aware that I can call on My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

54But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen this way?”

55At that time Jesus said to the crowd, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would an outlaw? Every day I sat teaching in the temple courts,and you did not arrest Me.

56But this has all happened so that the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted Him and fled.

Jesus before the Sanhedrin

57Those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and elders had gathered.

58But Peter followed Him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. And he went in and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.

59Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrinwere seeking false testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death.

60But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward

61and declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”

62So the high priest stood up and asked Him, “Have You no answer? What are these men testifying against You?”

63But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to Him, “I charge You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God.”

64“You have said it yourself,” Jesus answered. “But I say to all of you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Powerand coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65At this, the high priest tore his clothes and declared, “He has blasphemed! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.

66What do you think?” “He deserves to die,” they answered.

67Then they spit in His face and struck Him. Others slapped Him

68and said, “Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit You?”

Peter Denies Jesus

69Meanwhile, Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came up to him. “You also were with Jesus the Galilean,” she said.

70But he denied it before them all: “I do not know what you are talking about.”

71When Peter had gone out to the gateway, another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man!”

73After a little while, those standing nearby came up to Peter. “Surely you are one of them,” they said, “for your accent gives you away.”

74At that he began to curse and swear to them, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed.

75Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

1Vả, Đức Chúa Jêsus đã phán những lời ấy xong rồi, thì phán cùng môn đồ rằng:

2Các ngươi biết rằng còn hai ngày nữa thì đến lễ Vượt qua, và Con người sẽ bị nộp để chịu đóng đinh trên cây thập tự.

3Bấy giờ các thầy tế lễ cả và các trưởng lão trong dân nhóm lại trong tòa thầy cả thượng phẩm tên là Cai-phe;

4và bàn với nhau dùng mưu chước gì đặng bắt Đức Chúa Jêsus mà giết.

5Song họ nói rằng: Không nên làm trong ngày lễ, e trong dân chúng sanh ra điều xào xạc chăng.

6Khi Đức Chúa Jêsus ở làng Bê-tha-ni, tại nhà Si-môn là người phung,

7có một người đàn bà cầm cái chai bằng ngọc trắng đựng dầu thơm quí giá lắm, đến gần mà đổ trên đầu Ngài đang khi ngồi ăn.

8Môn đồ thấy vậy, giận mà trách rằng: Sao phí của như vậy?

9Dầu nầy có thể bán được nhiều tiền và lấy mà thí cho kẻ nghèo nàn.

10Đức Chúa Jêsus biết điều đó, bèn phán cùng môn đồ rằng: Sao các ngươi làm khó cho người đàn bà đó? Người đã làm việc tốt cho ta;

11vì các ngươi thường có kẻ nghèo ở cùng mình, song sẽ không có ta ở cùng luôn luôn.

12Người đổ dầu thơm trên mình ta là để sửa soạn chôn xác ta đó.

13Quả thật, ta nói cùng các ngươi, khắp cả thế gian, hễ nơi nào Tin Lành nầy được giảng ra, thì cũng thuật lại việc người ấy đã làm để nhớ đến người.

14Bấy giờ có một người trong mười hai sứ đồ, tên là Giu-đa ỗch-ca-ri-ốt, đến tìm các thầy tế lễ cả,

15mà nói rằng: Các thầy bằng lòng trả cho tôi bao nhiêu đặng tôi sẽ nộp người cho? Họ bèn trả cho nó ba chục bạc.

16Từ lúc đó, nó tìm dịp tiện để nộp Đức Chúa Jêsus.

17Trong ngày thứ nhất ăn bánh không men, môn đồ đến gần Đức Chúa Jêsus mà thưa rằng: Thầy muốn chúng tôi dọn cho thầy ăn lễ Vượt qua tại đâu?

18Ngài đáp rằng: Hãy vào thành, đến nhà một người kia, mà nói rằng: Thầy nói: Giờ ta gần đến; ta và môn đồ ta sẽ giữ lễ Vượt qua trong nhà ngươi.

19Môn đồ làm y như lời Đức Chúa Jêsus đã dạy mà dọn lễ Vượt qua.

20Đến tối, Ngài ngồi ăn với mười hai sứ đồ.

21Khi đang ăn, Ngài phán rằng: Quả thật, ta nói cùng các ngươi rằng có một người trong các ngươi sẽ phản ta.

22Các môn đồ lấy làm buồn bực lắm, và lần lượt hỏi Ngài rằng: Lạy Chúa, có phải tôi không? Ngài đáp rằng:

23Kẻ nào để tay vào mâm với ta, ấy là kẻ sẽ phản ta.

24Con người đi, y theo lời đã chép về Ngài; song khốn nạn thay cho kẻ phản Con người! Thà nó chẳng sanh ra thì hơn!

25Giu-đa là kẻ phản Ngài cất tiếng hỏi rằng: Thưa thầy, có phải tôi chăng? Ngài phán rằng: Thật như ngươi đã nói.

26Khi đang ăn, Đức Chúa Jêsus lấy bánh, tạ ơn rồi, bẻ ra đưa cho môn đồ mà rằng: Hãy lấy ăn đi, nầy là thân thể ta.

27Ngài lại lấy chén, tạ ơn rồi, đưa cho môn đồ mà rằng: Hết thảy hãy uống đi;

28vì nầy là huyết ta, huyết của sự giao ước đã đổ ra cho nhiều người được tha tội.

29Ta phán cùng các ngươi, từ rày về sau, ta không uống trái nho nầy nữa, cho đến ngày mà ta sẽ uống trái nho mới cùng các ngươi ở trong nước của Cha ta.

30Khi đã hát thơ thánh rồi, Đức Chúa Jêsus và môn đồ đi ra mà lên núi Ô-li-ve.

31Ngài bèn phán rằng: Đêm nay các ngươi sẽ đều vấp phạm vì cớ ta, như có chép rằng: Ta sẽ đánh kẻ chăn chiên, thì chiên trong bầy sẽ bị tan lạc.

32Song sau khi ta sống lại rồi, ta sẽ đi đến xứ Ga-li-lê trước các ngươi.

33Phi-e-rơ cất tiếng thưa rằng: Dầu mọi người vấp phạm vì cớ thầy, song tôi chắc không bao giờ vấp phạm vậy.

34Đức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Quả thật, ta nói cùng ngươi, chính đêm nay, trước khi gà gáy, ngươi sẽ chối ta ba lần.

35Phi-e-rơ thưa rằng: Dầu tôi phải chết với thầy đi nữa, tôi chẳng chối thầy đâu. Hết thảy môn đồ đều nói y như vậy.

36Rồi Đức Chúa Jêsus cùng môn đồ đi đến một chỗ kêu là Ghết-sê-ma-nê. Ngài phán rằng: Hãy ngồi đây đợi ta đi cầu nguyện đằng kia.

37Đoạn, Ngài bèn đem Phi-e-rơ và hai người con của Xê-bê-đê đi với mình, tức thì Ngài buồn bực và sầu não lắm.

38Ngài bèn phán: Linh hồn ta buồn bực cho đến chết; các ngươi hãy ở đây và tỉnh thức với ta.

39Rồi Ngài bước tới một ít, sấp mặt xuống đất mà cầu nguyện rằng: Cha ơi! nếu có thể được, xin cho chén nầy lìa khỏi Con! Song không theo ý muốn Con, mà theo ý muốn Cha.

40Kế đó, Ngài trở lại với môn đồ, thấy đang ngủ, thì Ngài phán cùng Phi-e-rơ rằng: Thế thì các ngươi không tỉnh thức với ta trong một giờ được!

41Hãy thức canh và cầu nguyện, kẻo các ngươi sa vào chước cám dỗ; tâm thần thì muốn lắm, mà xác thịt thì yếu đuối.

42Ngài lại đi lần thứ hai, mà cầu nguyện rằng: Cha ơi! nếu chén nầy không thể lìa khỏi Con được mà Con phải uống thì xin ý Cha được nên.

43Ngài trở lại nữa, thì thấy môn đồ còn ngủ; vì mắt họ đã đừ quá rồi.

44Đoạn, Ngài bỏ mà lại đi cầu nguyện lần thứ ba, và lặp xin như lời trước.

45Rồi Ngài đi đến với môn đồ, mà phán rằng: Bây giờ các ngươi ngủ và nghỉ ngơi ư! Nầy, giờ đã gần tới, Con người sẽ bị nộp trong tay kẻ có tội.

46Hãy chờ dậy, đi hè, kìa kẻ phản ta đến kia.

47Khi Ngài còn đang phán, xảy thấy Giu-đa là một người trong mười hai sứ đồ đến với một bọn đông người cầm gươm và gậy, mà các thầy tế lễ cả và các trưởng lão trong dân đã sai đến.

48Đứa phản Ngài đã trao cho bọn đó dấu nầy: Người nào mà tôi sẽ hôn, ấy là người đó, hãy bắt lấy.

49Tức thì Giu-đa đến gần Đức Chúa Jêsus mà rằng: Chào thầy! Rồi hôn Ngài.

50Nhưng Đức Chúa Jêsus phán cùng nó rằng: Bạn ơi! vậy thì vì việc nầy mà ngươi đến đây sao? Rồi chúng nó đến gần tra tay bắt Đức Chúa Jêsus.

51Và nầy, có một người trong những người ở với Đức Chúa Jêsus giơ tay rút gươm ra, đánh đầy tớ của thầy cả thượng phẩm, chém đứt một cái tai của người.

52Đức Chúa Jêsus bèn phán rằng: Hãy nạp gươm vào vỏ; vì hễ ai cầm gươm thì sẽ bị chết về gươm.

53Ngươi tưởng ta không có thể xin Cha ta lập tức cho ta hơn mười hai đạo thiên sứ sao?

54Nếu vậy, thế nào cho ứng nghiệm lời Kinh Thánh đã chép rằng việc nầy tất phải xảy đến?

55Lúc bấy giờ, Đức Chúa Jêsus phán cùng chúng rằng: Các ngươi đem gươm và gậy đến mà bắt ta, khác nào như ta là kẻ cướp. Ta thường ngày ngồi trong đền thờ và giảng dạy tại đó, mà các ngươi không bắt ta.

56Nhưng mọi điều ấy phải xảy đến, hầu cho những lời các đấng tiên tri đã chép được ứng nghiệm. Khi ấy, hết thảy môn đồ bỏ Ngài mà trốn đi.

57Những kẻ đã bắt Đức Chúa Jêsus đem Ngài đến nhà thầy cả thượng phẩm Cai-phe, tại đó các thầy thông giáo và các trưởng lão đã nhóm lại.

58Phi-e-rơ theo Ngài xa xa cho đến sân của thầy cả thượng phẩm, vào ngồi với các kẻ canh giữ đặng coi việc ấy ra làm sao.

59Bấy giờ các thầy tế lễ cả và cả tòa công luận kiếm chứng dối về Ngài, cho được giết Ngài.

60Dầu có nhiều người làm chứng dối có mặt tại đó, song tìm không được chứng nào cả. Sau hết, có hai người đến,

61nói như vầy: Người nầy đã nói Ta có thể phá đền thờ của Đức Chúa Trời, rồi dựng lại trong ba ngày.

62Thầy cả thượng phẩm bèn đứng dậy mà nói với Ngài rằng: Những người nầy làm chứng mà kiện ngươi, ngươi không thưa lại gì sao?

63Nhưng Đức Chúa Jêsus cứ làm thinh. Thầy cả thượng phẩm lại nói với Ngài rằng: Ta khiến ngươi chỉ Đức Chúa Trời hằng sống mà thề, hãy nói cho chúng ta, ngươi có phải là Đấng Christ, Con Đức Chúa Trời chăng?

64Đức Chúa Jêsus đáp rằng: Thật như lời; vả lại, ta nói cùng các ngươi, về sau các ngươi sẽ thấy Con người ngồi bên hữu quyền phép Đức Chúa Trời, và ngự trên mây từ trời mà xuống.

65Thầy cả thượng phẩm bèn xé áo mình mà nói rằng: Nó đã nói phạm thượng; chúng ta còn cần gì người làm chứng nữa sao? Các ngươi vừa nghe lời phạm thượng đó, thì nghĩ làm sao?

66Chúng trả lời rằng: Nó đáng chết!

67Họ bèn nhổ trên mặt Ngài, đấm Ngài, lại có kẻ vả Ngài,

68mà nói rằng: Hỡi Đấng Christ, hãy nói tiên tri đi; cho chúng ta biết ai đánh ngươi.

69Bấy giờ Phi-e-rơ vẫn ngồi ngoài sân. Có một người đầy tớ gái đến gần, mà nói cùng người rằng: Ngươi cũng là kẻ ở với Jêsus, người Ga-li-lê.

70Song Phi-e-rơ chối trước mặt chúng mà rằng: Ta không hiểu ngươi nói chi.

71Khi đi ra ngoài cửa, lại có một đầy tớ gái khác thấy người, bèn nói cùng kẻ ở đó rằng: Người nầy cũng ở với Jêsus, người Na-xa-rét.

72Song Phi-e-rơ lại chối và thề rằng: Ta chẳng hề biết người ấy.

73Một chặp nữa, những kẻ ở gần đó đến gần nói với Phi-e-rơ rằng: Chắc thật, ngươi cũng thuộc về đảng ấy, vì tiếng nói của ngươi khai ngươi ra.

74Người bèn rủa mà thề rằng: Ta không biết người đó đâu! Tức thì gà gáy.

75Phi-e-rơ nhớ lại lời Đức Chúa Jêsus đã phán rằng: Trước khi gà gáy, ngươi sẽ chối ta ba lần. Đoạn, người đi ra và khóc lóc cách đắng cay.
