The Temptation of Jesus

1Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

2where for forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He was hungry.

3The devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

4But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”

5Then the devil led Him up to a high place and showed Him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.

6“I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory,” he said. “For it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish.

7So if You worship me, it will all be Yours.”

8But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”

9Then the devil led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down from here.

10For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning Youto guard You carefully,

11and they will lift You up in their hands,so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

12But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

13When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region.

15He taught in their synagogues and was glorified by everyone.

The Rejection at Nazareth

16Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath. And when He stood up to read,

17the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written:

18“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me,because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor.He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captivesand recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed,

19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20Then He rolled up the scroll, returned it to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him,

21and He began by saying, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

22All spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” they asked.

23Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard that You did in Capernaum.’”

24Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

25But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and great famine swept over all the land.

26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to the widow of Zarephath in Sidon.

27And there were many lepersin Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet. Yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”

28On hearing this, all the people in the synagogue were enraged.

29They got up, drove Him out of the town, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him over the cliff.

30But Jesus passed through the crowd and went on His way.

Jesus Expels an Unclean Spirit

31Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath He began to teach the people.

32They were astonished at His teaching, because His message had authority.

33In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon. He cried out in a loud voice,

34“Ha! What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

35But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” At this, the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without harming him.

36All the people were overcome with amazement and asked one another, “What is this message? With authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”

37And the news about Jesus spread throughout the surrounding region.

Jesus Heals at Peter’s House

38After Jesus had left the synagogue, He went to the home of Simon, whose mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. So they appealed to Jesus on her behalf,

39and He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and began to serve them.

40At sunset, all who were ill with various diseases were brought to Jesus, and laying His hands on each one, He healed them.

41Demons also came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But He rebuked the demons and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Christ.

Jesus Preaches in Judea

42At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place, and the crowds were looking for Him. They came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving.

43But Jesus told them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, because that is why I was sent.”

44And He continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea.

1Đức Chúa Jêsus đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh, ở bờ sông Giô-đanh về, thì được Đức Thánh Linh đưa đến trong đồng vắng,

2tại đó, Ngài bị ma quỉ cám dỗ trong bốn mươi ngày. Trong những ngày ấy, Ngài không ăn chi hết, k” đã mãn thì Ngài đói.

3Ma quỉ bèn nói với Ngài rằng: Nếu ngươi là Con Đức Chúa Trời, thì hãy khiến đá nầy trở nên bánh đi.

4Đức Chúa Jêsus đáp: Có chép rằng: Loài người được sống chẳng phải chỉ nhờ bánh mà thôi.

5Ma quỉ đem Ngài lên, cho xem mọi nước thế gian trong giây phút;

6và nói rằng: Ta sẽ cho ngươi hết thảy quyền phép và sự vinh hiển của các nước đó; vì đã giao cho ta hết, ta muốn cho ai tùy ý ta.

7Vậy, nếu ngươi sấp mình xuống trước mặt ta, mọi sự đó sẽ thuộc về ngươi cả.

8Đức Chúa Jêsus đáp: Có chép rằng: Ngươi phải thờ phượng Chúa, là Đức Chúa Trời ngươi, và chỉ hầu việc một mình Ngài mà thôi.

9Ma quỉ cũng đem Ngài đến thành Giê-ru-sa-lem, để Ngài trên nóc đền thờ, mà nói rằng: Nếu ngươi là Con Đức Chúa Trời, hãy gieo mình xuống đi;

10vì có chép rằng: Chúa sẽ truyền cho thiên sứ gìn giữ ngươi,

11Các đấng ấy sẽ nâng ngươi trong tay, Kẻo ngươi vấp chân nhằm đá nào chăng.

12Đức Chúa Jêsus đáp: Có phán rằng: Ngươi đừng thử Chúa, là Đức Chúa Trời ngươi.

13Ma quỉ dùng hết cách cám dỗ Ngài rồi, bèn tạm lìa Ngài.

14Đức Chúa Jêsus được quyền phép Đức Thánh Linh, trở về xứ Ga-li-lê, và danh tiếng Ngài đồn khắp các xứ chung quanh.

15Ngài dạy dỗ trong các nhà hội, ai nấy đều khen ngợi Ngài.

16Đức Chúa Jêsus đến thành Na-xa-rét, là nơi dưỡng dục Ngài. Theo thói quen, nhằm ngày Sa-bát, Ngài vào nhà hội, đứng dậy và đọc.

17Có người trao sách tiên tri Ê-sai cho Ngài, Ngài dở ra, gặp chỗ có chép rằng:

18Thần của Chúa ngự trên ta: Vì Ngài đã xức dầu cho ta đặng truyền Tin Lành cho kẻ nghèo;

19Ngài đã sai ta để rao cho kẻ bị cầm được tha, Kẻ mù được sáng, Kẻ bị hà hiếp được tự do; Và để đồn ra năm lành của Chúa.

20Đoạn, Ngài xếp sách, trả lại cho kẻ giúp việc, rồi ngồi xuống; mọi người trong nhà hội đều chăm chỉ ngó Ngài.

21Ngài bèn phán rằng: Hôm nay đã được ứng nghiệm lời Kinh Thánh mà các ngươi mới vừa nghe đó.

22Ai nấy đều làm chứng về Ngài, lấy làm lạ về các lời đầy ơn lành từ miệng Ngài ra, và nói rằng: Có phải con Giô-sép chăng?

23Ngài phán rằng: Chắc các ngươi lấy lời tục ngữ nầy mà nói cùng ta rằng: Hỡi thầy thuốc, hãy tự chữa lấy mình; mọi điều chúng ta nghe ngươi đã làm tại Ca-bê-na-um, thì cũng hãy làm tại đây, là quê hương ngươi.

24Ngài lại phán rằng: Quả thật, ta nói cùng các ngươi, không có một đấng tiên tri nào được trọng đãi trong quê hương mình.

25Ta nói thật cùng các ngươi, về đời Ê-li, khi trời đóng chặt trong ba năm sáu tháng, cả xứ bị đói kém, trong dân Y-sơ-ra-ên có nhiều đàn bà góa;

26dầu vậy, Ê-li chẳng được sai đến cùng một người nào trong đám họ, nhưng được sai đến cùng một đàn bà góa ở Sa-rép-ta, xứ Si-đôn.

27Trong đời đấng tiên tri Ê-li-sê, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên cũng có nhiều kẻ mắc tật phung; song không có ai lành sạch được, chỉ Na-a-man, người xứ Sy-ri mà thôi.

28Ai nấy ở trong nhà hội nghe những điều đó, thì tức giận lắm.

29Họ đứng dậy kéo Ngài ra ngoài thành, đưa Ngài lên đến chót núi, là nơi họ xây thành ở trên, để quăng Ngài xuống;

30song Ngài qua giữa bọn họ và đi khỏi.

31Ngài xuống thành Ca-bê-na-um, thuộc xứ Ga-li-lê, dạy dỗ trong ngày Sa- bát.

32Mọi người đều cảm động về sự dạy dỗ của Ngài; vì Ngài dùng quyền phép mà phán.

33Vả, trong nhà hội có một người bị tà ma ám, cất tiếng kêu lớn lên rằng: Hỡi Jêsus Na-xa-rét!

34Chúng tôi với Ngài có sự gì chăng? Ngài đến để diệt chúng tôi sao? Tôi biết Ngài là ai: là Đấng Thánh của Đức Chúa Trời!

35Song Đức Chúa Jêsus quở nặng nó, mà rằng: Hãy nín đi, và ra khỏi người nầy. Quỉ bèn vật ngã người giữa đám đông, rồi ra khỏi không làm hại chi đến người.

36Mọi người đều sững sờ, nói cùng nhau rằng: Aáy là đạo gì đó? Người lấy phép và quyền đuổi tà ma, và chúng nó liền ra!

37Vậy danh tiếng Ngài đồn khắp các nơi xung quanh.

38Đức Chúa Jêsus ra khỏi nhà hội, vào nhà Si-môn. Bà gia Si-môn đang đau rét nặng lắm. Người ta xin Ngài chữa cho,

39Ngài bèn nghiêng mình trên người, truyền cho cơn rét, rét liền lìa khỏi. Tức thì người chờ dậy hầu việc.

40Khi mặt trời lặn rồi, ai nấy có người đau, bất k” bịnh gì, đều đem đến cùng Ngài; Ngài đặt tay lên từng người mà chữa cho họ.

41Cũng có các quỉ ra khỏi nhiều kẻ, mà kêu lên rằng: Ngài là Đấng Christ, Con Đức Chúa Trời! Nhưng Ngài quở nặng chúng nó, cấm không cho nói mình biết Ngài là Đấng Christ.

42Vừa rạng ngày, Ngài ra đi đến nơi vắng vẻ, một đoàn dân đông kéo đi tìm Ngài. Họ theo kịp, giữ Ngài ở lại, không muốn để Ngài đi.

43Nhưng Ngài phán cùng họ rằng: Ta cũng phải rao Tin Lành của nước Đức Chúa Trời nơi các thành khác; vì cốt tại việc đó mà ta được sai đến.

44Vậy Ngài giảng dạy trong các nhà hội xứ Ga-li-lê.
