The Birth of Jesus

1Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that a census should be taken of the whole empire.

2This was the first census to take place whileQuirinius was governor of Syria.

3And everyone went to his own town to register.

4So Joseph also went up from Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, since he was from the house and line of David.

5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to him in marriage and was expecting a child.

6While they were there, the time came for her Child to be born.

7And she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son. She wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The Shepherds and the Angels

8And there were shepherds residing in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks by night.

9Just then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

10But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid! For behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people:

11Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord!

12And this will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

13And suddenly there appeared with the angel a great multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying:

14“Glory to God in the highest,and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests!”

15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

16So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the Baby, who was lying in the manger.

17After they had seen the Child, they spread the message they had received about Him.

18And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

19But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, which was just as the angel had told them.

Jesus Presented at the Temple

21When the eight days before His circumcision had passed, He was named Jesus, the name the angel had given Him before He was conceived.

22And when the time of purification according to the Law of Moses was complete, His parents brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord

23(as it is written in the Law of the Lord: “Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to the Lord”),

24and to offer the sacrifice specified in the Law of the Lord: “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

The Prophecy of Simeon

25Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

26The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

27Led by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts.And when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for Him what was customary under the Law,

28Simeon took Him in his arms and blessed God, saying:

29“Sovereign Lord, as You have promised,You now dismiss Your servant in peace.

30For my eyes have seen Your salvation,

31which You have prepared in the sight of all people,

32a light for revelation to the Gentiles,and for glory to Your people Israel.”

33The Child’s father and mother were amazed at what was spoken about Him.

34Then Simeon blessed them and said to His mother Mary: “Behold, this Child is appointed to causethe rise and fall of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against,

35so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your soul as well.”

The Prophecy of Anna

36There was also a prophetess named Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, who was well along in years. She had been married for seven years,

37and then was a widow to the age of eighty-four.She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.

38Coming forward at that moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the Child to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

The Return to Nazareth

39When Jesus’ parents had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.

40And the Child grew and became strong.He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him.

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

41Every year His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover.

42And when He was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the Feast.

43When those days were over and they were returning home, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but His parents were unaware He had stayed.

44Assuming He was in their company, they traveled on for a day before they began to look for Him among their relatives and friends.

45When they could not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for Him.

46Finally, after three days they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

47And all who heard Him were astounded at His understanding and His answers.

48When His parents saw Him, they were astonished. “Child, why have You done this to us?” His mother asked. “Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You.”

49“Why were you looking for Me?” He asked. “Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?”

50But they did not understand the statement He was making to them.

51Then He went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But His mother treasured up all these things in her heart.

52And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Chúa Giê-xu Giáng Sinh

1Thời đó, Hoàng đế La Mã Âu-gút-tơra lệnh kiểm kê dân số khắp Đế quốc La Mã.

2(Đây là cuộc kiểm kê dân số đầu tiên, được thực hiện thời Qui-ri-ni làm tổng trấn xứ Sy-ri.)

3Mọi người đều phải về quê đăng ký.

4Vì Giô-sép thuộc dòng họ Đa-vít, nên phải từ thành Na-xa-rét xứ Ga-li-lê, về làng Bết-lê-hem, xứ Giu-đê, quê hương Vua Đa-vít,

5đăng ký cho mình và cô Ma-ri, vị hôn thê đang có thai.

6Về đến Bết-lê-hem, Ma-ri tới ngày sinh nở.

7Cô sinh con trai đầu lòng, lấy khăn bọc lại, đặt trong máng cỏ, vì nhà quán không còn chỗ trọ.

Mục Đồng và Thiên Sứ

8Tại miền đó, có mấy người chăn chiên đang ở ngoài đồng, thức đêm canh giữ bầy chiên.

9Thình lình, một thiên sứ của Chúa hiện ra, hào quang Chúa chói lòa khắp nơi. Họ vô cùng kinh hãi,

10nhưng thiên sứ liền trấn an: “Đừng sợ, tôi đến báo cho các anh một tin mừng. Tin này sẽ đem lại niềm vui lớn cho mọi người.

11Đêm nay, Đấng Cứu Rỗi—phải, Đấng Mết-si-a, là Chúa—đã ra đời tại Bết-lê-hem, thành Đa-vít!

12Các anh sẽ nhận ra Ngài bởi dấu hiệu: Các anh gặp một em bé quấn khăn nằm trong máng cỏ.”

13Thình lình, vô số các thiên sứ hiện ra, hợp với thiên sứ ấy ca ngợi Đức Chúa Trời:

14“Vinh quang Đức Chúa Trời nơi chí cao,bình an dưới đất cho người được ơn!”

15Khi các thiên sứ lên trời, các người chăn chiên bảo nhau: “Chúng ta hãy tới làng Bết-lê-hem xem chuyện lạ Chúa vừa cho biết!”

16Họ vội vã đến nơi, gặp Ma-ri, Giô-sép, và thấy Con Trẻ đang nằm trong máng cỏ.

17Họ liền thuật lại việc vừa xảy ra và những lời thiên sứ nói về Con Trẻ.

18Mọi người nghe đều ngạc nhiên,

19riêng Ma-ri ghi nhớ từng chi tiết và suy nghiệm trong lòng.

20Các người chăn chiên trở về, ca tụng Đức Chúa Trời về những điều nghe thấy, đúng như lời thiên sứ nói.

Lễ Dâng Con Trẻ trong Đền Thờ

21Tám ngày sau, Con Trẻ chịu lễ cắt bì và được đặt tên là Giê-xu, như thiên sứ đã dặn trước khi Ngài giáng sinh.

22Khi những ngày thanh tẩy theo luật Môi-se đã mãn sau khi sinh con, Ma-ri và Giô-sép đem Con Trẻ lên Giê-ru-sa-lem dâng lên Chúa.

23Vì luật Chúa dạy: “Mọi con trai đầu lòng phải dâng lên Chúa Hằng Hữu,”

24và “dâng một cặp chim cu hay bồ câu tơ”theo luật định của Chúa.

Lời Tiên Tri của Si-mê-ôn

25Lúc đó, tại Giê-ru-sa-lem có một người tên là Si-mê-ôn. Ông là người công chính, mộ đạo, và ngày đêm trông đợi Đấng Mết-si-a đến để giải cứu Ít-ra-ên. Chúa Thánh Linh ngự trong lòng ông,

26và cho biết ông sẽ được thấy Đấng Mết-si-a của Chúa trước khi qua đời.

27Hôm đó, Chúa Thánh Linh thúc giục ông vào Đền Thờ, nhằm lúc Ma-ri và Giô-sép đem Con Trẻ đến dâng lên Chúa đúng theo luật lệ.

28Si-mê-ôn bồng Con Trẻ và tôn ngợi Đức Chúa Trời:

29“Lạy Chúa Chí Cao, bây giờ con có thể an vui qua đời,theo lời hứa của Ngài.

30Vì chính mắt con đã thấy Đấng Cứu Chuộc

31mà Ngài chuẩn bị cho nhân loại.

32Ngài là ánh sáng rọi đường cho các dân tộc,là vinh quang cho người Ít-ra-ên, dân Ngài!”

33Giô-sép và Ma-ri kinh ngạc về những lời Si-mê-ôn nói về Con Trẻ.

34Sau khi cầu phước lành cho hai người, Si-mê-ôn nói riêng với Ma-ri: “Con Trẻ này sẽ làm cho nhiều người Ít-ra-ên vấp ngã trong khi nhiều người được giải cứu. Con Trẻ sẽ bị người ta chống đối.

35Kết quả là những tư tưởng thầm kín của họ bị phơi ra ánh sáng. Còn bà sẽ bị đau đớn như gươm đâm thấu vào tâm hồn bà!”

Lời Tiên Tri của A-ne

36Hôm đó, nữ Tiên tri An-ne cũng có mặt trong Đền Thờ. Bà là con gái của Pha-nu-ên, thuộc đại tộc A-se, trước kia đã sống với chồng được bảy năm,

37rồi ở góa cho đến năm tám mươi bốn tuổi. Bà cứ ở luôn trong Đền Thờ, ngày đêm thờ phượng Đức Chúa Trời, kiêng ăn và cầu nguyện.

38Lúc Si-mê-ôn nói chuyện với Ma-ri và Giô-sép, bà cũng vừa tới đó, cảm tạ Đức Chúa Trời và báo cho mọi người biết Đấng Cứu Chuộc họ trông đợi đã đến rồi.

39Sau khi làm xong mọi việc theo luật pháp của Chúa, Giô-sép và Ma-ri trở về Na-xa-rét, xứ Ga-li-lê.

40Tại đó, Con Trẻ lớn lên, khỏe mạnh, đầy khôn ngoan, và ơn phước của Đức Chúa Trời.

Chúa Giê-xu Nói Chuyện với Các Giáo Sư

41Hằng năm, Giô-sép và Ma-ri đều lên Giê-ru-sa-lem dự lễ Vượt Qua.

42Khi Chúa Giê-xu được mười hai tuổi, Ngài theo cha mẹ đi dự lễ.

43Sau đó, cha mẹ trở về nhà. Chúa Giê-xu vẫn ở tại Giê-ru-sa-lem mà ông bà không biết.

44Họ đinh ninh Ngài cùng đi với đám đông, nên cứ đi suốt một ngày, đến tối mới tìm trong nhóm bà con bạn hữu.

45Tìm không được, họ trở lại Giê-ru-sa-lem.

46Ba ngày sau, ông bà tìm gặp Ngài đang ngồi trong Đền Thờ, giữa các thầy dạy luật, chất vấn và bàn cãi nhiều vấn đề quan trọng.

47Mọi người đều ngạc nhiên về kiến thức và lời đối đáp của Ngài.

48Thấy thế cha mẹ Ngài vô cùng sửng sốt. Mẹ Ngài trách: “Con ơi, sao con để cha mẹ như thế này? Cha mẹ phải vất vả lo lắng tìm con!”

49Ngài hỏi: “Cha mẹ tìm con làm chi? Cha mẹ không biết con phải lo việc Cha con sao?”

50Nhưng ông bà chẳng hiểu Ngài nói gì.

51Sau đó, Ngài trở về Na-xa-rét, phục tùng cha mẹ. Mẹ Ngài ghi nhớ mọi việc trong lòng.

52Chúa Giê-xu càng thêm khôn lớn, càng đẹp lòng Đức Chúa Trời và mọi người.
