Joshua

1Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.

2And Jehovah said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thy hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valor.

3And ye shall compass the city, all the men of war, going about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.

4And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.

5And it shall be, that, when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him.

6And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of Jehovah.

7And they said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let the armed men pass on before the ark of Jehovah.

8And it was so, that, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before Jehovah passed on, and blew the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah followed them.

9And the armed men went before the priests that blew the trumpets, and the rearward went after the ark, the priests blowing the trumpets as they went.

10And Joshua commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.

11So he caused the ark of Jehovah to compass the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

12And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of Jehovah.

13And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of Jehovah went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; and the rearward came after the ark of Jehovah, the priests blowing the trumpets as they went.

14And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.

15And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early at the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.

16And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for Jehovah hath given you the city.

17And the city shall be devoted, even it and all that is therein, to Jehovah: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

18But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when ye have devoted it, ye take of the devoted thing; so would ye make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it.

19But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy unto Jehovah: they shall come into the treasury of Jehovah.

20So the people shouted, and the priests blew the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

21And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.

22And Joshua said unto the two men that had spied out the land, Go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.

23And the young men the spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; all her kindred also they brought out; and they set them without the camp of Israel.

24And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein; only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of Jehovah.

25But Rahab the harlot, and her father’s household, and all that she had, did Joshua save alive; and she dwelt in the midst of Israel unto this day, because she hid the messengers, whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

26And Joshua charged them with an oath at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before Jehovah, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: with the loss of his first-born shall he lay the foundation thereof, and with the loss of his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.

27So Jehovah was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.

2ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Giô-suê : “Xem đây ! Ta nộp vào tay ngươi thành Giê-ri-khô, vua và các dũng sĩ của thành ấy.

3Các ngươi, tất cả những người tham chiến, các ngươi sẽ đi vòng quanh thành, đi chung quanh thành một lần ; (các) ngươi sẽ làm như vậy sáu ngày.

4Bảy tư tế sẽ cầm bảy cái tù và bằng sừng cừu đi trước Hòm Bia. Ngày thứ bảy, các ngươi sẽ đi vòng quanh thành bảy lần, và các tư tế sẽ thổi tù và.

5Khi tù và bằng sừng cừu rú lên, khi các ngươi nghe tiếng tù và, thì toàn dân lớn tiếng hò reo xung trận. Bấy giờ tường thành sẽ sụp đổ tại chỗ ; dân chúng ai nấy cứ thẳng trước mặt mình mà tiến lên.”

6Ông Giô-suê, con ông Nun, triệu tập các tư tế và nói với họ : “Các ông hãy khiêng Hòm Bia Giao Ước, và bảy tư tế phải cầm bảy tù và bằng sừng cừu đi trước Hòm Bia của ĐỨC CHÚA.”

7Ông nói với dân : “Hãy tiến tới và đi vòng quanh thành ; những người được vũ trang hãy qua phía trước Hòm Bia của ĐỨC CHÚA.”

8Điều đó đã xảy ra như ông Giô-suê đã nói với dân. Bảy tư tế cầm bảy tù và bằng sừng cừu qua phía trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA, vừa đi vừa thổi ; còn Hòm Bia Giao Ước của ĐỨC CHÚA thì đi sau họ.

9Quân tiên phong đi trước các tư tế đang thổi tù và. Quân hậu vệ đi theo sau Hòm Bia. Ai nấy bước đi theo tiếng tù và.

10Trước đó ông Giô-suê đã ra lệnh này cho dân : “Anh em đừng hò reo xung trận, đừng để ai nghe thấy tiếng anh em, đừng hé môi nói ra lời nào, cho đến ngày tôi bảo anh em : Hãy hò reo xung trận ! Bấy giờ, anh em mới hò reo xung trận.”

11Hòm Bia ĐỨC CHÚA đi vòng quanh thành, đi một vòng chung quanh, rồi ai nấy trở về trại và qua đêm tại đó.

12Sáng hôm sau, ông Giô-suê dậy sớm, và các tư tế khiêng Hòm Bia ĐỨC CHÚA.

13Bảy tư tế cầm bảy tù và bằng sừng cừu đi trước Hòm Bia ĐỨC CHÚA, vừa đi vừa thổi ; quân tiên phong đi trước họ, và quân hậu vệ theo sau Hòm Bia ĐỨC CHÚA ; ai nấy bước đi theo tiếng tù và.

14Ngày thứ hai, họ đi vòng quanh thành một lần, rồi trở về trại. Họ làm như vậy sáu ngày.

15Ngày thứ bảy, họ dậy sớm khi hừng đông ló rạng, và đi vòng quanh thành bảy lần cùng theo một cách thức. Chỉ có ngày đó họ mới đi vòng quanh thành bảy lần.

16Đến lần thứ bảy, khi các tư tế thổi tù và, ông Giô-suê nói với dân : “Hãy hò reo xung trận, vì ĐỨC CHÚA đã nộp thành cho anh em.”

17“Thành và mọi sự trong thành sẽ bị án tru hiến để kính ĐỨC CHÚA, chỉ có cô kỹ nữ Ra-kháp và mọi người ở với cô trong nhà là sẽ được sống, vì cô đã giấu các sứ giả chúng ta sai đi.

18Tuy nhiên, anh em phải đề phòng án tru hiến, kẻo anh em bị án tru hiến vì lấy đồ vật nào trong số những gì bị án biệt hiến. Bằng không, anh em sẽ làm cho trại Ít-ra-en phải bị án tru hiến, và như thế anh em gây tai hoạ cho trại.

19Tất cả vàng bạc, mọi đồ đồng, đồ sắt sẽ được thánh hiến cho ĐỨC CHÚA, và được sung vào kho tàng của ĐỨC CHÚA.”

20Bấy giờ, dân hò reo xung trận, và người ta rúc tù và. Vừa nghe tiếng tù và, dân lớn tiếng hò reo xung trận, và tường thành sụp đổ tại chỗ. Dân chúng ai nấy cứ thẳng trước mặt mình mà tiến lên đánh thành, và đã chiếm được.

21Họ dùng lưỡi gươm mà thi hành án tru hiến mọi sự trong thành, từ đàn ông cho đến đàn bà, từ người trẻ cho đến người già, đến cả bò lừa và chiên cừu.

22Ông Giô-suê nói với hai người đã đi do thám trong xứ : “Hãy vào nhà người kỹ nữ, và đem người đàn bà ấy cũng như mọi người thân thuộc của cô ra khỏi đó, theo như anh em đã thề hứa với cô.”

23Vậy các người thanh niên do thám vào nhà cô Ra-kháp, và đem cô ra khỏi đó cùng với cha mẹ, anh em cô và mọi người thân thuộc của cô ; họ đem tất cả thị tộc của cô ra khỏi đó, và cho họ ở bên ngoài trại Ít-ra-en.

24Rồi họ phóng hoả đốt thành cũng như tất cả những gì trong đó ; ngoại trừ vàng bạc và những đồ đồng, đồ sắt, thì người ta nộp vào kho tàng nhà ĐỨC CHÚA.

25Nhưng cô kỹ nữ Ra-kháp cùng với gia đình cha cô và mọi người thân thuộc của cô, thì ông Giô-suê để cho sống. Cô ở giữa dân Ít-ra-en cho đến ngày nay, vì cô đã giấu sứ giả ông Giô-suê sai đi do thám Giê-ri-khô.

26thì con út của nó phải mạng vong !”

27ĐỨC CHÚA ở với ông Giô-suê, và danh tiếng đồn ra khắp xứ.
